You can use HTTPS just for processing passwords, and then move people back to regular HTTP. That is how facebook works for example.

The game, whether flash or JavaScript, is run in the browser. So it does not really concern the web server. Why create a server "from scratch" for that ? Wouldn't NGINX, Lighty or Apache be good ?
